2. Examination alignment

The July 2026 review maps the curriculum to the public ASCP BOC HT/HTL Examination Content Guideline revised December 5, 2025.

Published percentage ranges describe the official examination content areas, not a promise that this site duplicates the exact distribution or difficulty of an individual examination.

3. Source hierarchy

1. Official examination resources: the current public ASCP BOC content guideline and suggested reading list establish the alignment framework.
2. Established histotechnology texts: current or widely recognized references such as Carson and Cappellano, Bancroft and Gamble, Brown, and HTL-appropriate immunohistochemistry texts support technical explanations.
3. Primary regulatory and safety sources: applicable government regulations and official safety information are preferred for hazard and compliance topics.
4. Validated laboratory documents: local SOPs, instrument instructions, assay instructions for use, safety data sheets, and quality requirements govern actual laboratory work.

Sources are summarized and cited; copyrighted books, examination questions, proprietary SOPs, and restricted documents are not reproduced.

4. Practice-question standards

Each module contains ten original multiple-choice questions. Questions are reviewed against the following criteria:

• One best answer is supported by the lesson and reference set.
• Distractors are plausible but are not trick answers based on obscure wording.
• The explanation states the principle or corrective reasoning, not only the answer letter.
• Local-policy questions identify the need to follow validated SOPs rather than presenting one facility’s practice as universal.
• Questions do not claim to predict actual examination items or scores.

5. General principles versus SOP-dependent practice

Histotechnology methods vary by specimen, laboratory, instrument, reagent system, validation, intended use, and regulation. The guide separates durable principles from operational details that require local control.

6. Review dates and version numbers

Each module displays a semantic version and an exact editorial review date. Version changes follow this convention:

• Patch change — wording, formatting, citation, or minor clarification without changing the learning conclusion.
• Minor change — new explanation, question revision, reference update, or meaningful content expansion.
• Major change — substantial restructuring or a change that alters important conclusions or study strategy.

Content is reviewed when the public examination guideline changes, when a credible correction is received, or when a source update materially affects the lesson. A displayed date means editorial review, not independent peer review by ASCP or another certifying body.
