About the creator and the guide

Practical histology education grounded in laboratory experience

Free HTL Guide was created to make technical histology material easier to organize, understand, and apply—without hiding the limitations of an independent educational resource.

Natnale Mengesha, HTL(ASCP)cm

Natnale is a working histotechnologist and molecular pathology scientist with experience spanning routine histology, IHC, ISH, multiplex tissue imaging, digital pathology, and laboratory troubleshooting.

He is currently engaged in part-time graduate study in Pathology Laboratory Sciences at Boston University. The site reflects professional laboratory experience and continued academic study; it does not claim completion of that graduate degree.

Why this exists

A more organized path from facts to reasoning

Understand the mechanism

Lessons explain why fixation, processing, orientation, staining chemistry, controls, and quality systems affect the final slide.

Connect it to the bench

Artifacts and troubleshooting are treated as consequences of workflow variables rather than isolated facts to memorize.

Practice with explanations

Original questions are designed to reinforce reasoning, with explanations that identify why an answer fits the scenario.

Editorial approach

How the material is developed and maintained

Scope and alignment

Topics are organized around major HT and HTL knowledge areas and practical laboratory workflows. Candidates should still use the current official ASCP BOC content guideline and eligibility information as the controlling source.

Practical review

Content is checked for internal consistency, expected controls, common artifacts, safety language, and the distinction between general education and a laboratory-specific validated procedure.

Transparency

The guide identifies itself as independent, avoids implying official endorsement, and distinguishes completed credentials from education that is still in progress.

Corrections

Readers can report an error with the page title, exact passage, and supporting source. Material can then be reviewed and revised through the public site repository.

Important boundaries

What Free HTL Guide is—and is not

It is

  • An independent study companion.
  • A structured review of histology mechanisms and workflow decisions.
  • A source of original practice questions and printable educational tools.
  • A growing project that welcomes correction reports.

It is not

  • An official ASCP or ASCP BOC publication.
  • A guarantee of examination performance.
  • A substitute for current eligibility or candidate guidance.
  • A replacement for validated laboratory SOPs, safety programs, or professional judgment.
