What is Free HTL Guide?
Free HTL Guide is an independent HT/HTL certification exam-preparation platform. It combines structured histotechnology lessons, original practice questions, mock-exam previews, and progress-based review so learners can build knowledge, test recall, and focus later study on weaker areas.
Who is the platform designed for?
The primary audience is people preparing for the HT or HTL certification examination. The lessons also support histotechnology students, laboratory trainees, working histotechnologists refreshing core knowledge, pathology laboratory professionals, and educators seeking structured histotechnology instruction.
Is this an official ASCP website?
No. Free HTL Guide is not affiliated with or endorsed by ASCP or the ASCP Board of Certification. Use the platform alongside the current official examination content guideline, eligibility information, and candidate resources.
What can I study for free?
The complete Fixation lesson, its 10-question practice quiz, and selected Fixation resources are available free without an account. You can also explore the course outline and preview Premium lessons and preparation tools.
Why should I create a free account?
A free account lets you save eligible study progress, continue across devices, review recent activity, and manage your learning records. Creating an account does not automatically include Premium lessons or practice tools.
What is included with Premium now?
Premium learners can currently use all six securely delivered course lessons: Processing and Decalcification, Embedding and Microtomy, Routine H&E Staining, Special Stains, Laboratory Operations, and IHC/ISH Fundamentals; the secure 10-question Processing module quiz; the account-linked six-week study plan; and Premium progress guidance. Every course module is designed to include a quiz. The remaining Premium module quizzes, expanded practice, mock exams, Targeted Practice, protected downloads, and future updates appear only as their scientific/editorial and protected-release gates are completed and verified.
Which exam domains are covered?
The course covers Fixation; Processing and Decalcification; Embedding and Microtomy; Routine H&E; Special Stains; Laboratory Operations; and an HTL-focused IHC and ISH lesson. The lessons connect mechanisms and facts with artifacts, controls, safety, workflow decisions, and troubleshooting.
How do lessons, quizzes, mock exams, and Targeted Practice work together?
Lessons build the foundation. Module quizzes reinforce each subject as each reviewed quiz is released. Mixed practice, mock exams, and Targeted Practice remain previewed until their secure release gates pass; when released, those tools will extend cross-domain testing and focused review. My Progress already brings eligible released learning activity together and suggests a release-safe next step.
Are the practice questions official examination questions?
No. The questions are original educational items. They are not copied from a certification examination and do not claim to predict exact exam questions.
How many questions are in the expanded bank?
The expanded bank contains 150 records: 70 authority-reviewed base questions and 80 alternate scenarios undergoing final scientific and editorial review. The alternate scenarios will not be described as fully reviewed until that work is complete.
Does a quiz or mock-exam score predict whether I will pass?
No. Scores and the 80% study target are private study indicators only. They are not official ASCP scores, passing standards, or guarantees of examination performance.
Do I need laboratory access?
No. You can study the lessons and questions without laboratory access. Supervised bench practice can strengthen the connection between the concepts and real workflow decisions when it is available.
Can I use the material as a laboratory procedure?
No. Educational guidance does not replace your laboratory’s validated SOPs, safety requirements, manufacturer instructions, quality system, regulatory obligations, or supervisory guidance.
How is the content reviewed?
The guide uses published HT/HTL content areas, established histotechnology references, regulatory and safety sources where relevant, internal consistency checks, question review criteria, visible review dates, and a correction pathway. See Editorial Standards for the complete approach.
How can I report an error or suggest a topic?
Use the Contact page and include the page name, exact statement, concern, and a supporting source when available. Do not send patient-identifiable or employer-confidential information.
